DRESSING IN THE COLOUR OF 2021

After the success of last years ‘Colour of the Year’ post, I thought I would do another one this year, for 2021. Pantone has chosen two colours this year- Ultimate Grey and Illuminating (Yellow). These colours were chosen and put together to symbolise warmth and dependability and express the message of strength and hope. The director at Pantone said that the colours are supposed to be uplifting and remind us that we are all in this together, and we are not alone.

I love what Pantone’s colours of the year convey and the sentiment behind them but they are both colours I don’t own and would find difficult to wear. If you are feeling the same, here’s my styling tips for how you can incorporate these colours into your wardrobe…

1. Go grey for the coat

Let’s be honest, the colour grey can often make an outfit look a little drab and dull. However, both light and dark grey coats can be staple pieces as they go with everything and are completely versatile. If you choose the right coat, it can look more expensive than traditional black and camel coloured ones, due to the ability to see the detailing more clearly. To throw some yellow in the mix, you can add a simple scarf or a yellow knit to the look. This will keep the outfit classy and not too overpowered by the colourful yellow. If this look is good enough for Queen B, it’s good enough for me!

2. Make it street

In contrast to the first tip which aimed to create a classy look, these styles shown above bring a more youthful, edgy and urban twist with the two colours. By opting to wear streetwear styles such as oversized tees, jumpers and blazers, you can make a statement and show the ‘cool’ elements of this colour pairing. Keep it casual and comfortable and you’ll ultimately feel more at ease. With lockdowns still happening, these looks will also be perfect for sitting at home in.

3. Monochromatic

Another way you can use grey and yellow together is by having your clothing all one colour. For example, you could have a completely grey outfit on and pair it with a yellow handbag, hat or sunglasses and vice versa. Mono-chromatic looks are a more bold way to explore the two colours together, especially if you’re going with an all yellow outfit, but they can add a lot of personality to your outfit and elevate it. If you’re not quite ready to go monochrome (I know I’m not!), then you can slowly build up to it, using more and more pieces of the colour each time.

Will you be wearing Pantone’s colours of 2021 or will you give it a miss this year? Let me know your opinions in the comments!
